I've written many times about my little sewing group. We get together once a month to sew on a Saturday (we call it Sewing on Saturday, or SOS). We decided that in 2009, each of us would be responsible for the "theme" and food for certain months. Tomorrow is our first sewing day for the year. My friend T has chosen the theme "Blast From The Past" and we are going to work on really old UFOs! The only "guideline" is that the UFO must be at least 2 years old. (not a problem, right?!?)
Here's my UFO - a set of blocks I received several years ago in a swap on About.com's quilting forum. We had a pattern designed just for us by Marcia Hohn at www.quilterscache.com called "Swapper's Star" and we swapped purple blocks.
Most of the blocks are done with a white-on-white background, but there were 4 in my pack that had dark backgrounds.
Actually, this isn't a problem to me - I will place a block with a dark background in each of the 4 corners of the quilt. I plan to use white-on-white sashing strips and assorted purple setting squares. I think they will accentuate the squares in the corners of the block quite nicely - kind of making a chain effect across the quilt. Tomorrow I'll audition some of these fabrics for the setting squares and for borders:
If you recognize ANY of these fabrics, you'll know they are OLD. I know the top two in the stack on the right are old old Jinny Beyer blender fabrics from RJR - have to be at least 10 years old, probably more like 15 or so! Tomorrow I'll look at the selvedges and snap a pic so we'll know for sure!
Oh, our "Blast From the Past" lunch will be Frito Pies -remember going to the drive-in or to the high-school ballgames and getting a frito pie made right in the frito bag? It will be fun. I'll take some pictures and hopefully get this UFO turned into a quilt top tomorrow!
What is a frito pie??
Love the purple quilt - lots of lovely border choices- you might have to use more than one

As a matter of fact, I do recognize some of the fabrics....bottom right circle-y one...made Ben boxers from the magenta version of that. Looks like those will work with the blocks for sure.

How much fun is that? Wish I had some sewing/crafty friends around here. Love those squares. Very nice work from the exchanges.

Sounds like a good time for everyone. I am looking forward to seeing what you have at the end of the day.
