Once again, I'm showing up late.... how long since I blogged? Oh well, better late than never. I'm like a lot of other bloggers I've run across. I'm a great blogger in my mind, but it seldom gets into print. I have such a busy schedule, and when I'm relaxing, I'm a slug.
Take today, for instance. I set my alarm clock for 6:00 am, but the dogs consistently wake me at 4:50 am to go out and potty. I usually go back to sleep afterwards, but its not that deep restful sleep. In fact, I often have some pretty wild dreams during that short snooze! At 6:00 I'm up, and by 6:30 I'm out of the shower, dressed, and ready to feed the dogs. After feeding we make one more trip out, then I'm on the way to work by 6:45 at the latest. I got off work at 6:00 this evening. Joe's gone to a meeting, and I fed the dogs and walked them before running to Taco Hell to get a bean burrito for supper. Its now 7:30 pm and I'm catching up my e-mail and blogging. Before I go to bed, I'll probably knit for 30 minutes or so and will take the dogs out one more time. I'll be in bed by 10:00 pm. Happy birthday to me!
I read somewhere that you aren't really grown up until you lose your parents. At that point, you are no longer in a relationship where you're the child, and you reach a higher level of maturity because you are now "the grown up" person. I think that's true. Today was nothing special - no sour grapes or complaints - it is really just another day on the calendar. Oh, by the way, I'm 46 now.
Christmas wasn't as difficult as I expected it to be. In fact, it was a really nice time for me and my sister. She fixed a turkey breast and stuffing (that was in my mom's freezer, so it was like she was there with us) as well as a spiral sliced honey ham, hot rolls, green bean casserole (she and I are the only ones who eat it), corn on the cob, pumpkin pie, and a chocolate pecan pie. The dogs were so good during dinner - my two layed on the floor under our chairs and never begged for a morsel. My sister's dog and Tara's little Bella both begged relentlessly throughout the meal. Goofy fell from grace shortly after dinner though, when he pulled the pyrex pan full of ham off the counter and it shattered on my sister's new stone tile floor. In the noise and confusion, the dogs didn't actually get to eat any of the leftover ham, but it was full of glass shards and went into the trash anyway. Now I owe her a new pyrex dish. *grin* I already gave her $$ for the groceries.
Joe and I went to the movies on Monday evening to see "Fun With Dick and Jane" - cute movie! We laughed a lot and it was an enjoyable hour and a half. We both like Jim Carrey, and Tea Leoni was a perfect partner for him in this movie. We saw some great previews too - don't ask me now to name them, but we have several on the list to see when they come out. Joe is able to sit a little longer at a time now, so we plan to go to the movies more often next year. That is one of the things we missed doing after Joe hurt his back.
Yesterday I took Joe to the doctor for a procedure called Facet Rhizotomy. Its a nerve-deadening procedure done under anesthesia and it will last for 6 months to 2 years. A needle/probe is inserted and the nerves in the facet joints between the vertebrae are isolated and then paralyzed with a microwave-pulse through the probe. They did 10 sites on his back - essentially every facet joint nerve on the left and right sides of each lumbar vertabrae (L1 thru L5). His fusion and cage hardware is on the L1-L2-L3 vertabrae. He said he felt improvement on the right side of his back last night, but they told us it could take a week to see a reduction in the pain he's been feeling. I hope this procedure will bring him significant relief - it wears on him so much to hurt all the time.
I had to laugh this morning. Kevin called and told me that his day was starting out badly - first he was awakened by cats yowling and howling under his house. (Evidently the screens on the crawlspace are loose) After he figured that out, he was tucking his sheets into the sides of the waterbed and discovered he had a leak. He got his water hose out of the garage and proceeded to start draining the bed. Fortunately his room mate has gone home for the holiday so he can sleep on that bed. I told him "welcome to being a grown-up"! That's how it goes sometimes.
I think I'll go have a piece of birthday fudge. Good night from grown-up city.
