This week at work, I'm training with the girl who handles inventory problems. She will be out for several weeks for surgery, and I'll have the dubious honor of "taking her place". OMG, I will be a raving lunatic by the time this is over. I swear, she gets all the weird stuff that no one else knows what to do with. Yeah, like I'm supposed to know what to do? Please, just leave your brain in the top left desk drawer when you go to the hospital, ok? I don't know how much I can absorb in two weeks from this person who's been doing this for 8 years. A guy came in with some samples to send out (which is part of her job) and I told him, "you know we won't be doing this during September and October, now." and he just stared at me with a stricken look on his face. That was fun. I finally told him I was kidding. Kind-of. Mercy, the days do fly by at that desk.... I sure miss my gal-pals in my regular office.
I'm having some computer problems at home that are giving me a hinky feeling. This weekend, I had multiple crashes while surfing, and most re-boots didn't load on the first try. I had to shut it down, leave it awhile, then try again, and man, it loaded sooo slooow. I'm thinking hard drive failure. I've defragged and set a new restore point, and I'm shopping for a new computer. I think I have some extended warranty left, but I don't want another tower pc - I want a laptop like the one I gave Joe for father's day. I'm going to burn a backup of my files onto a cd later tonight just in case... I did get the software to transfer programs from the old 'puter to a new one, if I can just get a new one before this one craps out.
Here's a fun website: http://www.samugliestdog.com . Here's his blog. Here's the video clip on CNN - scroll down to Jeanne Moos' story about this guy. We printed this dog's picture off the internet a month or so ago and hung it up on our bulletin board at work - looking at it is like watching a train wreck. You just can't help it!
I picked up a copy of the August (Issue 5) Simply Knitting magazine from the UK tonight. I love this magazine! Its a bit pricey for a subscription, but I'm strongly considering it since there was one copy at the little book-and-music chain in my town. I've missed two issues already.
Still scared to cast on for socks.... I did pick up a couple of my novelty yarns and started a scarf from each one. I've got some Bernat Galaxy (color Saturn-its green) on the size 15's, and the Coats & Clark Kiss in flame knitted with some Caron Simply Soft in autumn red (strands held together) on the size 17's. Fast, easy, fun. Procrastination at its finest! Pictures later when they actually look like something.
We've been discussing home improvement during the last week or so. We've been wanting to build a detached garage on our property for several years now, and we may go ahead and do so since we have the cash to do it now. We're thinking we'd build a 30' x 30' 2-car garage with a 15' x 30' living space on one end, including plumbed with a half-bathroom with a shower as well as the washer and dryer, and refrigerator. We would move out to that area and then do some major renovation on our house. We lived in the house during our last build-on addition 22 years ago - don't really want to do that again. We need to update all the flooring, one bathroom, some lighting, and do some new wall treatments like taking down the old wallpaper and doing something else like italian plaster or some fun paint. It would be a great way to get rid of many years' accumulation of junk. Working in an empty house is just so much easier - especially since we'd be hiring some of the work done this time around. I'd also like to add a pergola to our deck in back, and replace some fencing, but I want to get the inside stuff done first. If anyone knows of some good home-improvement blogs, please send me the links ok? thanks!
I fell in love with this crochet cat book after seeing it on a couple of blogs.... I bought it from SASUGA JAPANESE BOOK STORE online, and would love to find someone who could translate the instructions for me. This Japanese amigurumi seems to be very popular right now, but I just adore this cat. Bears and other animals don't do it for me. I would even send the book to someone and pay them to make one for me, if they'd write the instructions in english. I even googled this thing to pieces, tracking it down to several Japanese websites and running them through the translation tool, but you know that doesn't really work all that well since the essence of the Japanese language is so poetic and full of politeness. (does that make sense?) I've seen this book and crocheted cat on some blogs so SOMEONE has to understand how to make this. I wrote to a couple of people but got no response - they probably thought I was asking for free directions. Bummer. Anyway, can anyone give me some help or refer me to someone else? Many thanks in advance...
We've hit the wall with regard to cleaning out my folks' house. My sis is having serious issues and cannot make herself come over, so I'm rethinking our options. If I could get her husband to come get the appliances and the bedroom set that they want, I could move the sewing room furniture to my house, pack up the photos and other things we want to keep, and either have someone come buy the estate or let Joe start tagging stuff and have a garage sale. This isn't going to get any easier with time. If we rented a storage unit and moved all the "maybe we should save this" stuff into it, you know its the kind of stuff that when you look through it 3 years later you think "why did I pay to store this crap?" In other words, everything is fraught with emotion and sentiment right now, but that will vanish as time passes; how do you know what will fit into this category? *sigh* We've donated a ton of stuff (clothing, bedding, etc.) to charity already, and have several people in mind to give certain things to (quilt group ladies, mom's friends, people with specific interests). I'm feeling some pressure to get this taken care of since we've had serious inquiries about the house. It would make sense to sell it while there is an interest in it, and not be paying the utilities every month. If anyone has any advice, please share! We're kind-of stuck in this spot and need to move on.
Well, its doggie bedtime so I will wrap this up. Gotta get up 30 minutes early for work tomorrow - departmental safety meeting tomorrow at 7:00 am so I'll have to go in earlier than usual. I overslept this morning; that reminds me that I should check the battery on my alarm clock since it didn't go off, and the time looked wrong when I glanced at it awhile ago. This could be a problem, huh? Eh, well... goodnight.
